Soul Retrieval, Returning the Fragments of Self

Soul Retrieval:

Soul retrieval is a core shamanic healing practice that seeks to restore lost fragments of an individual's soul. In shamanic traditions, it is believed that trauma, emotional distress, or major life events can cause parts of the soul to "split off" or become detached. This process, known as soul loss, can result in feelings of incompleteness, disconnection, depression, chronic illness, or patterns of misfortune.

Soul retrieval is performed by a shaman or a shamanic practitioner who journeys into the spiritual realms to find and reintegrate the lost soul fragments, restoring the person's vitality, balance, and wholeness.

When we explore the concept of “soul loss”, it’s essential to recognize that no part of our soul is ever truly lost. We are not singular, static beings—we are a kaleidoscope of expression, existing across multiple dimensions. Our soul is not a single note but a vast and intricate symphony.

In the third-dimensional human experience, we may fall into the illusion of soul loss, feeling fragmented or disconnected. Yet, in higher dimensions, we remain whole, with full access to every aspect of our being. As we loosen our attachment to the human dimension of ego, we begin to remember and reclaim our inherent wholeness, realizing that we were never truly separate to begin with.

“Soul loss” is often associated with experiences such as:

  • Trauma: Physical abuse, sexual assault, emotional abuse, violence
  • Grief & Loss: Death of a loved one, breakup, miscarriage
  • Accidents & Surgery: Near-death experiences, severe injuries
  • Major Life Transitions: Moving, divorce, job loss
  • Addiction & Codependency: Dysfunctional relationships, substance abuse
  • Spiritual or Energetic Attack: Curses, energy vampirism, or malevolent forces

In shamanic belief, soul loss is a survival mechanism—it allows us to temporarily disassociate from parts of ourselves to avoid the full weight of trauma all at once. In other words, we instinctively protect our conscious self by separating from certain aspects of our energy.

A common misconception in shamanism is that parts of our soul can be stolen or held captive by another, often by an abuser. However, from the perspective of our highest soul self, we are always whole. No part of us can be inhibited or taken without our permission. We are, and always will be, sovereign over our own energy.

If a part of our soul has been consciously or subconsciously influenced or inhibited by another, we always have the power to call back every aspect of our energy and release any energy we may unknowingly be holding from others. That said, if these "lost" soul parts do not naturally reintegrate, it can lead to chronic imbalances, affecting our well-being on multiple levels.

Some indications of soul loss include:

  • Chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, or a sense of numbness
  • Feeling like something is "missing" or like one is not fully present
  • Persistent feelings of dissociation or being "stuck in the past"
  • Gaps in memory, inability to recall certain life events
  • Addiction, self-destructive behaviors, and repeated negative patterns
  • Difficulty forming deep connections with others

The Soul Retrieval Process

A shamanic practitioner typically follows these steps:

  1. Entering a Trance State – The shaman uses drumming, rattling, breathwork, or plant medicine to enter an altered state of consciousness.
  2. Journeying to the Spirit World – The shaman travels to non-ordinary reality (Upper, Middle, or Lower Worlds) to locate the missing soul parts.
  3. Retrieving the Soul Fragment – The shaman communicates with the lost part, persuading it to return if it is ready.
  4. Returning & Reintegrating the Soul – The shaman blows the soul essence back into the client’s body, often into the heart and crown chakras.
  5. Post-Retrieval Integration – The person must work to integrate the returned soul essence through self-care, therapy, or ritual to solidify healing.

Effects & Aftercare

After soul retrieval, individuals may experience:

  • Increased energy, clarity, and emotional resilience
  • Release of past pain and trauma
  • A renewed sense of purpose and joy
  • Heightened creativity and intuition
  • Temporary disorientation as the soul integrates

Shamanic traditions recommend grounding activities such as journaling, meditation, time in nature, or ceremonial practices to stabilize the healing.

Soul Retrieval in Modern Shamanic Healing

Many contemporary shamanic practitioners offer soul retrieval as part of holistic healing. These practitioners may combine traditional shamanic techniques with modern therapeutic approaches, ensuring the process is accessible to those unfamiliar with indigenous traditions.

Key aspects of modern shamanic soul retrieval:

  • Sessions may be conducted in person or remotely.
  • Practitioners use drumming, guided meditation, or breathwork instead of plant medicines.
  • Integration counseling is often included to help clients process the return of soul parts.
  • Some practitioners specialize in past-life soul retrieval, addressing soul loss from previous incarnations.

Soul Retrieval Meditation:

Open Sacred Space. Light a white candle and place it near you. Using your drum or rattle in a rhythmic pattern record your voice with this meditation and play it back for you or have someone read it to you.

Close your eyes if it serves you or soften your gaze. Take a deep breath in… and out. Feel the breath as your anchor, the thread that connects all that you are. With every inhale, arrive fully in the present. With every exhale, release what does not belong. (Pause.)

Breathe into your heart space. Feel its steady rhythm, ancient and strong. Now, imagine stepping inward, deeper, into the heart’s core—a vast cavern, still and sacred. (Pause.)

Within this sanctuary, a flicker of flame glows—a pure, unwavering light. It is the essence of you, eternal and whole. As you breathe, the flame expands, rising, transforming into a luminous tree. (Pause.)

Its branches stretch high into the cosmos, receiving infinite wisdom. Its roots descend deep into the heart of the earth, wrapping around Gaia’s crystalline core. This tree is you—it has always been you. (Pause.)

A cocoon of golden light swirls around it, shimmering with iridescence. Yet, look closely—do you see fine threads, places where energy is drawn away? These are spaces where power has been unknowingly given. (Pause.)

Call upon the highest light to clear all that does not serve you. Inhale deeply… and on the exhale, release. Watch as the threads dissolve, vanishing into pure light. (Pause.)

Beyond your luminous tree, scattered like stars, are shimmering fragments—pieces of your soul, waiting to return. Watch as they move toward you, drawn back home, settling into the branches, the roots, the trunk. With each returning spark, your being glows brighter, more whole. (Pause.)

Now, bathe your energy field in golden nectar, filling any spaces that feel dim. Let it seal, strengthen, restore. Breathe. Receive. Know that you are complete. (Pause.)

Turn your awareness back to the flame within your heart. It has never left you. It never will.

With a deep breath, return to your body. Wiggle your fingers, your toes. Feel yourself fully anchored here, now. (Pause.)

Say to yourself:
I am here. I am now. I am free. I am whole. (Pause as the words are repeated.) When you are ready, open your eyes. Feel your light, your power, fully restored. And so it is. Aho.
